Taking Action In Addiction

The problem that exists when it comes to alcoholic accountability would be the fact that most people do not realize this is something they were lacking in their relationship until it is too late. If you have a family member that is drinking many times a week, this is something that you should not take lightly. Do not tell them that they do not have a problem. Instead, you want to ask them to begin changing the behavior. Very often, an addict will tell you that this is something they are choosing to do. They will claim that this is something they could stop if needed. When someone tells you this, you may want to tell them that you are going to hold them accountable for every time that they drink. When they are not being the ideal parent to their children or a good friend to others in their lives, this is something that you want to speak to them about before it gets worse. When you focus on an approach of alcoholic accountability, you would find that the person becomes more aware of the fact that they have a problem. As a result, you would then be able to take advantage of drug and alcohol intervention strategies without feeling like the person is going to dispute the fact that they need help in the battle against their addiction.

When you point out the problem all of the sudden, it is going to be a lot harder to get the person to the point where they are willing to accept help. As such, you want to get them adjusted to the idea of alcohol intervention programs through taking things one step at a time. However, if you notice that the problem is quickly getting out of control, the best way to hold them responsible would be to speak up right away. When you pull off an intervention with people that love this person, you are going to speak to them about the idea of getting help. Also, you want to tell them that you cannot continue to live your life in fear of the fact that they will not live to see another day. Instead, you want to ask that they get help if they would like to continue being a part of your life in the future. If you do not currently know how to pull this off, there are some effective alcoholic intervention strategies that are going to be the key to getting the person you care about to see they need help and begin to take action.

Addiction to Pain Medication

When people hear the term "drug addiction" their first thoughts are normally of illegal substances. But the reality is that, in Western society, addiction to pain meds is a far more widespread and serious problem. It accounts for more deaths annually than heroin and cocaine combined.

Oxycodone HCL is a prescription only narcotic, that functions in a similar way to morphine. It is prescribed for conditions that can cause moderate to severe pain such as arthritis or bone fractures. Patients must be carefully monitored when taking the drug as it is highly addictive, and it is all too easy for a dependency to develop.

When a person with an oxycodone addiction ceases taking the drug they will experience withdrawal symptoms. These include muscle cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. There are also severe psychological side effects such as anxiety or panic attacks.

The same is true of many other opiate based medications that are taken for pain relief. These include oxymorphone and meperidine. Typically, these are prescribed for short periods only but the patient can get hooked on the euphoric high associated with narcotics, and may continue to take them after their physician has recommended they stop.

Hydrocodone is another highly addictive narcotic that can cause very real and frightening symptoms when an addiction has taken hold. The addict may find that when they do not take the drug they develop chills, fever, sweating and exhibit other physical signs such as dilated pupils.

It is important to seek professional advice if you believe you or someone you love is suffering from an addiction to pain medication. A medical detox must be undertaken, but due to the nature of withdrawal symptoms and the high rate of relapse this should always be done under the care and supervision of a medical professional.

Having A Successful Intervention

If you do not know how to do a drug intervention, you may be putting yourself in the position of deciding to do nothing at all. Typically, these means hoping that the person -- that is getting high at the moment -- would wake up and realize that this is not the way to live. They need to get to the point of seeing that their future is not something they can accomplish through getting high. However, you should know that there are very few times that people are going to take it upon themselves to change the behaviors that they are choosing to take part in.

When it comes to drugs, these are often providing a shield for the pain that the person is suffering from. Since they function as an escape from reality, it is going to be very hard to get the person to see the importance of change on their own. As such, you may want to think about the advantages of a crack cocaine intervention compared to the approach that you are currently taking. If you wait for the drug user to get help, it is much more likely that they would never be able to remove themselves from the power that drugs currently have over them.

Also, they would not likely become responsible for the direction that their lives are headed in. Since they have been using drugs as a means of escaping, you can bet that they will continue to find comfort in this choice in the future. However, you may not want to figure out where is the bottom for a crack addict through watching someone that you care about go through pain. If you choose to do nothing about a drug problem, things will not magically get better. In fact, they will only continue to get worse.

The easiest way to pull off an intervention would be to surprise someone that you care about by having them walk into an organized group. When they sit down, you want to give each person the floor to talk about how these drugs have personally impacted them and their relationship with the addict. At the end, you simply want to offer a summary of everything that was said during the cocaine intervention and tell the addict that they need professional help now. Get them into a program that can begin treatment right away and this would mark a successful intervention for your family.

After a successful intervention, the best course-of-action is to get the newly-intervened addict to attend an inpatient treatment program, preferably one that includes 12 step addiction recovery, as the 12 steps have the highest success rates for long term sobriety.
